MAT WEAVING ARTIST OF MEDINIPUR (NATIONAL AWARD WINNER)

Mats in India are of different kinds and are produced in different parts of the country. However, the finer variety of mats, especially manufactured from madur grass (Cyperus tegetum) is concentrated in south-eastern part of the district of West Medinipur and artisan Alak Kumar Jana resides in Paschim Medinipur.
Mats are the integral part of Bengal’s lifestyle. According to Alak Kumar Jana Mat Weaving is a pride as well as tradition of this region. “We used to carry the mats on our heads and sold them in a local market after covering a distance of eight or nine km on foot,” said Jana. “The income was limited as village markets did not fetch enough money to run our livelihood. Somehow we survived.”
Alak Kumar Jana, a national award winning craftsman and the first to visit Harare in Zimbabwe to attend an exhibition and workshop on rural craft in 2013.
